In 1589, control passed from the Portuguese to the Spanish, who held the town for 80 years before Sultan Moulay Ismail stormed the defenses in 1691The Spanish built a Harmonious New Town beside the Medina, from which a slowly evolving new harbor and beaches extend northwards along the coast.
