Castel Sant'Angelo has stood guard over the Tiber for for 2,000 years, first as a symbol of Rome's imperial authority, then as a papal fortress. That was the Antonine emperors' burial place until Caracalla, and it was originally the mausoleum of the Roman emperor Hadrian.The fort is built in the shape of a circle encircled by a square, with each corner of the square covered by an individually constructed barbican, or outwork, and the central circle containing halls, chapels, residences, gardens, and other amenities.
