All that happened in Tangier from the 18th century took place inside the Medina, which is surrounded by the walls "Fortification" for protection & safety purposes. To access the Medina you must go through one of its Doors. In the old times, these doors were closed 1h30 after sunset and everything outside its walls was considered out of Tangier.
