Being a local inhabitant of Split, this tour aims to present you the town of Split through the eyes of a local. The tour represents a unique combination of a historical overview of Split coupled with some interesting stories. We will stop by some of the major historical monuments of Split and I will explain how they relate to the history of the town.
I will also include some interesting details and stories regarding the inhabitants of Split along with their customs and traditions. This tour does not only cover the parts of Split within the Diocletian's Palace but it also includes other significant town parts in the outmost vicinity of the Palace that are essential to understanding the complexities of the historical background of Split. Apart from the historical aspect I will reveal some passions that local inhabitants of Split share and I will mention some of the legends of the town and I will gladly give you advices as to what beaches, bars and restaurants are worth visiting.

Riva Harbor
As we meet up at the promenade you will see the southern wall of the Diocletian's palace, the Split harbour as well as the eastern and the western promenade/coast. I will provide you with some interesting information about the location of Split and it's surroundings and what makes the city of Split such a popular and unique destination.
10 minutesDiocletian Palace Substructures
We will enter the substructures of the Palace through the southern entrance of the Palace (the Bronze Gate), I will explain the specific role the substructures have had through history as we pass through the main corridor towards the Peristyle Square.
8 minutesThe Peristyle of Diocletian's Palace
We will stop at the central ancient square of the Palace, the famous Peristyle Square where I will lay out the historical and cultural background of this unique historical site.
10 minutesCathedral of Saint Domnius
I will explain what role the Mausoleum of the emperor Diocletian had and how it was turned into a Cathedral, I will also tell you something about the construction style of both the Cathedral and the adjacent Bell Tower, we will not be entering inside but I will provide you with all the important details as we observe them from the outside.
5 minutesTemple of Jupiter
As we leave the Peristyle Square we will visit the Temple of Jupiter and I will explain how it was turned into a baptistery as Christianity spread within the walls of the Palace. The Sphinx in front serves as a stark contrast to the sacral nature of the baptistery. We will not be entering inside the baptistery.
5 minutesFruit's Square (Trg Brace Radic)
Passing through the narrowest of all streets in Split the famous "Pusti me Proć" we reach the Fruit's square where I will talk about the town of Split and it's development or the lack thereof at the time when Split was under Venetian rule.
7 minutesMarko Marulic Sculpture
on the Fruit's square we will pass by the statue of the father of the Croatian Literature Marko Marulić
Palača Milesi
Just behind the statue of Marko Marulić we will also see the palace of the Milesi Family from the 17th Century
Narodni trg
Our next stop will be the main square in Split the famous Piazza, I will let you know about the historical development of this square and how it became the main square of the town of Split as the town expanded westward. This square abounds in different traditions and there were some really cool and somewhat odd customs that marked certain stages of its development. We will cover the historical part regarding the Austrian rule in Split and its influences.

Located at the western end of the Piazza Square we will see this recently renovated Palace once a property of one of the noble families of Split.

Palace belonging to one of the noble families of Split
Palace of Cipriamo de Ciprianis
A palace of the Noble Family from Korčula located at the eastern end of the Piazza Square.
Zeljezna Vrata
As we go eastward we will reach the western gate of the Palace. The famous iron gate have a rich history to tell as well with many a different activities having been conducted here in the past. We will see the oldest Bell Tower on this part of the Adriatic Sea.

We will pass by another palace built by the wealthy Cindro family in the 17th century.
Palace Augubio
A palace of a wealthy italian Family Augubio from the 15th Century.
City Museum of Split
The City Museum of Split is located in the Papalic Palace. The palace has a great historical significance and for all the Game of Thrones fans there is also an interesting albeit bloody scene that takes place in front of the palace.
3 minutesThe Golden Gate
The Northern, the most beautiful and the most decorated entrance to the Diocletian's palace, the way it is built is impressive and it is a testament to the building expertise of the ancient Romans.
7 minutesGrgur Ninski Statue
Just opposite the Northern Gate we will see the impressive statue of the Bishop Grgur of Nin, a work by the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. I will explain why the bishop Grgur represents such an important figure in the Croatian history.
5 minutesThe Bell Tower of St. Arnir
Just next to the statue of the bishop Grgur of Nin we will see the beautiful Bell Tower of saint Arnir along with the chapel of Saint. Arnir and the remnants of an early Christian church. Here I will say a couple of words about the situation in Split in World War 2.
5 minutesMarmontova Ulica
We will finish our tour at the top of the famous Marmontova street overlooking the Croatian National Theater and the Monastery and Church of our Lady of Health. I will cover the historical aspect of a short-lived but productive French administration in Split.
